Solidarity and Human Commitment to the Most Vulnerable

Medjugorje is known throughout the world as a place of prayer, spirituality and pilgrimage. However, its recent history shows another aspect of this small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina: its commitment to the most vulnerable, especially refugees.
During the Balkan Wars (1991–1995), Medjugorje became a refuge for thousands of people forced to flee their homes. Many parishes and families organized to create refugee camps and offer a safe haven.

Today, the same spirit endures.

Ongoing initiatives are in place to support and assist poor families in the region’s shelters. We, too, want to stand by these families. Humanitarian aid is the first step in restoring hope, strength, and dignity to those who have lost everything.

The testimony

“Many of these families live in extremely precarious conditions: they often inhabit a single room, in dilapidated spaces lacking even the most basic comforts. Poverty is widespread — a reality deeply rooted in the consequences of the war that left a lasting mark on this region more than 40 years ago.

I’d like to emphasize that our commitment is not limited to distributing food and basic necessities. We also try to spend time with these families, pray with them, and make them feel our presence. This is essential, because many of them confide in us a deep sense of loneliness and of being forgotten. Our presence seeks to respond to this suffering as well, offering both human and spiritual support.”
