Together like a family

Where: Carapira, Mozambique
Mozambique. A land that enchants… and that suffers.

A beautiful nation, rich in culture and deep humanity. But also a wounded land. In the North, torn apart by terrorist attacks. In the South, shaken by political instability. And everywhere, marked by deep social inequalities and inflation that makes it harder each day to live with dignity.

But climate change also strikes without mercy. And on March 9, 2025, it unleashed all its fury.
Cyclone “Jude” hit the provinces of Nampula and Nacala with devastating force: more than ten hours of relentless rain, fierce winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour, and, in its wake, only destruction and fear.

The Parish of Carapira — for almost eighty years a beating heart of hope thanks to the Comboni Missionaries, the Lay Missionaries, and the Sisters who walk alongside the people every day — was also severely hit.
Roofs torn off, entire villages wiped out, farmland — the only livelihood for thousands of families — submerged by water and mud.

The 98 Christian communities of the Parish suddenly found themselves brought to their knees. Entire families lost everything. They no longer have a safe home to shelter their children from the cold and damp nights. They don’t know if they’ll find anything to eat tomorrow.

Agriculture, the lifeblood for those who live off what they grow, was hit so hard that 70–80% of the entire season’s production is at risk — a disaster that is not only economic, but profoundly human.

Mozambique needs to know it is not alone.

The testimony

As missionaries, we truly feel the cry of Isaiah: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” because what pleases God is giving shelter to those without a home, feeding those who are hungry, and listening to the cry of those who suffer… in this way, our prayers will be answered, and God’s light will shine within us.” (Isaiah 58:1-9)
